About the Canadian Rockies Photo Expedition

This was a 7 day expedition

In January of 2023 I joined a photo expedition to the Canadian Rockies. Our guides were Edwin Martinez and Noel Casaje of Wide Horizon Photo Adventures who are both amazing, world renown photographers.  I had traveled with Edwin and Noel on other expeditions and it's always been an amazing experience with each trip resulting in significant growth in my skill level. This trip offered gorgeous scenes.  The methane bubbles trapped in the ice of Abraham Lake were amazing to see and photographing the owls was a special experience.

Calgary

This was our arrival and departure location.

Water Valley

Near Calgary was an opportunity to photograph owls as well as minimalist snow scenes.  Both were amazing opportunities.

Abraham Lake

Abraham Lake’s frozen bubbles are caused when plants and tree limbs on the bottom of the lake start decaying. During this process methane gas is released, creating bubbles in the water. When the temperature drops in the winter months, these methane bubbles become trapped in ice, suspended just below the surface of the water.

Preacher's Point

Another location on the lake which offered gorgeous mountains and enless ice.

Natural Bridge

Though this natural bridge spans rushing waters in the summer months, during the coldest part of the winter, it is frozen allowing access underneath.  We did a lighted night shoot in this location.

Morant's Curve

This iconic location is there the Pacific Railway travels along the Bow River.  There is no published train schedule so photographers sometimes wait hours for the trian to go by only for it to be traveling with the engine facing the less photographic direction but we got the perfect shot 5 minutes after we pulled up!

Three Sisters

Located near Canmore, these are some of the most recognized peeks in the area.

Ice Climber Night Shoot

We had the opportunity to photograph professional ice climbers one evening.  Both the shoot and the hike in were such memorable experiences.

Lake Louise

Sunrise at Lake Lousie offered golden mountains.

Emerald Lake

We had the opportunity for a blue hour shoot at Emerald Lake Lodge the enjoyed and amazing meal at the restaurant while we warmed up and recharged.

...behind the scenes

Some snapshots while on the expedition. Sometimes it's fun to see the behind the scenes images.

Noel showing off his ice-lashes.  This shoot was at about -32C.  It was a cold trip for sure.

Slowly moving in on a snowy owl which is perched on the green road sign.

Jenil was our owl guide and this guy was absolutely amazing.  His vision was super natural.  He could spot owls in perfect camouflage at half a mile or more out.

Edwin and I headed out for our first shoot in -32C temps.  Both us and our equipment survived.

Shooting on the ice provided it's challenges.

Ice wings. :)

Waiting for the light that never came.

Photographer's fingers are real.  Between dry air, freezing temps and frozen knobs and cranks, our fingers were bloody stumps.

Looking for owls while also kind of looking like an owl and/or the Michelin Man.
